Career Opportunities

What type of work environment are you looking for? One where you have an opportunity to develop your accounting career and still enjoy Maine’s celebrated lifestyle? One where turnover is very low due to the stable industry we serve? One where you will make an important contribution and assume challenging responsibilities immediately?

As an employee of Otis | Atwell you can look forward to an enjoyable, stimulating and fulfilling working environment. We are committed to providing top quality services to our clients by hiring, developing and retaining top quality employees. We are also committed to policies that foster high moral and ethical values and a dedication to the profession, firm, family and community.

Our ideal employee has a high level of intelligence, integrity, motivation and aptitude. We value personal achievements as well as academic and work experience. We do not adhere to a rigid set of guidelines concerning educational attainment. However, we generally seek employees whose academic training allows them to advance their careers through the CPA exam.

We believe that all persons are entitled to equal employment opportunities and do not discriminate based on race, creed, color, national origin, age, gender or physical handicap.

Firm Culture

Here’s what some of our employees are saying about us: friendly atmosphere, approachable managers and partners, great office space, willingness to change policies and address staff concerns. Our firm maintains a culture where our open communication among all levels encourages each individual to be innovative and creative with ideas that benefit our clients and our firm alike, and to speak freely about career development as well.

We Believe in People and Service to our Clients

We believe in our people and strive to allow each person to develop their own talents, as we realize our people are, and have always been the key to our success. We provide a wide range of services for our clients including audit, tax and business advice.

Work/Life Balance

The firm seeks to balance career and personal life. Full-time employees work overtime during the winter but enjoy four-day (32 hour) workweeks during the summer. The firm sponsors summer outings that have included Windjammer cruises, Maine Lobster Bakes, Portland Seadogs baseball games, and theme parks. Other events include the firm holiday party and lunch barbeques.

Education

The firm promotes the continued personal and professional growth of its entire staff. We require professional staff to obtain a minimum of forty hours of continuing professional education (CPE) per year at the company’s expense. It is also our policy for staff to assist in the training and development of staff members under their supervision. CPE includes a specialized in-house Lunch and Learn program dedicated to our core industries and offered throughout non-busy season. All new professional staff also receive specialized training on the software used by the Firm including tax, depreciation, trial balance and financial statement preparation. An excellent CPA exam assistance program includes reimbursement of the CPA examination fee for four sections of the exam, and staff may charge the examination time to “Professional Development”

We encourage the staff to be involved in all aspects of an engagement and to develop strong working relationships with our clients and other members of the business community. The firm also encourages involvement with professional and community organizations.

College Students

Otis | Atwell is always seeking talented college students and recent graduates to join our growing team. With opportunities to participate in our Internship program or join our team upon graduation, Otis | Atwell can help you turn your career expectations into reality.

Audit – Upon joining Otis | Atwell, not only will you work directly with a team of experienced auditors, you will soon be responsible for performing staff level services for all aspects of an audit project. Working two years on just Accounts Receivable simply doesn’t happen here. As a result of this method of training, Otis | Atwell can provide you with a challenging environment if your goal is to have a real chance for promotion without sacrificing your life for work.

Tax - Our tax professionals, like our audit professionals, are sought after throughout New England. Some audit staff accountants are groomed for our tax team. This is another key benefit of our small firm approach. Accountants are not limited to audit or tax, as our career path environment includes two way communication and choice.

We are registered at a number of Maine colleges and universities that offer electronic application to our programs. If you find we are not registered with your school, please feel free to submit a cover letter and resume to: bsylvester@otisatwell.com
